My Studio

I teach from my studio in Paddington in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia.

I have a very extensive collection of flute recordings, sheet music and flute methods. The methods are by flutists such as Kincaid, Gilbert, and Galway. I also quote from Johann Joachim Quantz’s On Playing the Flute, for period performance purposes (it’s the great work we refer to for questions of Baroque/Classical style.)

I also have good selection of teaching aids/paraphernalia including piano, B&W speakers and NAD stereo, AKG microphones for recording myself and students with Logic. I record a lot to provide examples to students because it’s still amazing to me how much better students can play with good models to listen to.

I’m also super-picky about the commercial recordings I recommend – it’s as easy to just copy bad playing/musicianship as good.

I enjoy using a fair bit of technology and the Covid pandemic brought into focus just how helpful tech can be. I do offer remote lessons when convenient or necessary and with the proliferation of good recording gear and improved Zoom, such lessons are much better than even a few years ago.

I enjoy playing a Brannen Cooper flute and a Hammig piccolo as my main instruments.
